DVD Review: MADLY MADAGASCAR

Feb 03, 2013 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

Everyone’s favorite gang of transplanted New York Central Zoo animals are back in an all-new adventure.

Alex the lion (Ben Stiller) is excited for his favorite holiday, Valentine’s Day, and wants everyone else to join in. Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) tries to plan the perfect surprise for his first Valentine’s Day with Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), but she thinks he’s trying to avoid her. Meanwhile, a bottle of Love Potion No. 9 falls from the sky into the hands of lemur King Julian, who decides to sell it to the other animals. A new okapi visits from another reserve, and Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock) wants her to notice him. He tries to stand out from the rest of the zebras by using the love potion, but the potion starts making all of the animals crazy.

This was a fun new adventure with our favorite characters from Madagascar. It contains all of the humor, music and fun I’ve come to expect from the franchise. It was also great to see almost all of the original voice talent return for this new special. This is an easy recommendation for fans of the franchise. However, while the DVD looks and sounds amazing, it is light on extras—only containing two DreamWorks shorts from 2006, unrelated to Madagascar.

Another DreamWorks Animation short film from 2006—this has already appeared on the DVD release of Over The Hedge. RJ the raccoon (Bruce Willis) films Hammy the hamster (Steve Carell) as he tries to use a boomerang and Verne the turtle (Garry Shandling) as he takes a bath.

The Madly Madagascar special itself is highly entertaining and a lot of fun, and is a great addition to the franchise. The picture quality is perfect, and the sound is a close second.

However, I was really disappointed by this DVD’s bonus features. The only things included are two unrelated shorts from seven years ago—one of which has already appeared on the DVD release of Over the Hedge.

I would still recommend this DVD for fans of the franchise, but I would suggest looking for a sale as the feature itself is only 22 minutes long.
