Primetime Pick: WAYWARD PINES

Tonight FOX’s exciting event series Wayward Pines comes to a close, and I’m really excited to see what happens next! Last week, the town had to deal with the aftermath of the bomb explosion. Ethan managed to fix the fence and keep the Abbies at bay, but things were quickly getting out of control. The townsfolk were taking it upon themselves to serve as judge, jury and executioner to Harold and his co-conspirators. Ethan was able to stop them before they got to Kate, but Pilcher and the others were all demanding she be reckoned.

Meanwhile, Theresa explored Plot 33, where she found an underground bunker containing a computer and recordings of Adam Hassler and others who had explored the globe, searching for any other human civilizations. None of them had survived their expeditions and all had come up empty handed. Ethan decided it was time for the people of Wayward Pines to learn the truth, so he arranged for several of them to see these recordings and then staged a fake reckoning for Kate, where he told the townsfolk everything. This did not sit well with Pilcher, who decided it was time to purge the town and start over. So he starting turning off all of the power to the town—including the power to the electric fence that protected them.

With no power, and the Abbies making their way into town, what is the fate of Wayward Pines? Can Ethan lead the people to safety and find a way for civilization to go on? Can Nurse Pam talk some sense into Pilcher? Will Pilcher finally get his comeuppance? I’m really looking forward to tonight’s exciting finale to see how this all ends!

Unlike other “limited series”, Wayward Pines was truly written to tell a complete story and give viewers a proper ending—it wasn’t written open-ended with hopes of getting a second season. That said, I have really enjoyed the show and would have loved to see a sequel (or even a prequel). Sadly, FOX has decided not to pick up the show for a second season despite its good ratings—it probably also didn’t help that the show has sat on the shelf for a couple years and the cast has already gone on to do other things. But I’m really happy we got this one exciting self-contained season!
