San Diego Comic-Con 2015 – Day 1 – Thursday

Jul 27, 2015 Posted by in Features | Comments

Thursday of Comic-Con was my first day of press rooms. I have been creating separate posts with videos from each room, and have linked those below, along with photos from the roundtables.

I started the day off early just walking around downtown and checking out some of the sights while waiting for my first press room of the day. In the Petco Park offsite area, there was a giant inflated Snoopy house, A Dark Souls III bloody fountain, a Scream Queens ride, and a Gotham photo opp.

As I was leaving the area, I crossed paths with some freaky-looking judges. At first I thought this was some sort of religious protest, especially when one of them started coming after me, but then realized it was a promotion for Amazon’s original series Hand of God.

As I headed to the Hard Rock Hotel for my press room, I stopped by the Expanse Cafe to take a look at what Syfy had done this year with their restaurant takeover.

My first press room of the year was for the new TV Land shows Teachers, The Jim Gaffigan Show and Impastor. Unfortunately, the whole thing was a bit disorganized. While we were waiting in the hallway to be let in, Rob Lowe walked by and many of us started to wonder if we were even in the right place.

After a while we were sent outside the building and they started randomly calling in outlets to do one-on-one interviews, which was taking much longer. Also, most of us that were there were expecting it to be roundtable format and not individual interviews. Things were running really late and I had to head out for my next press room, so I just popped in quickly and got photos of Impastor stars Sara Rue and Michael Rosenbaum.

After this I headed to the Hilton Bayfront, where the majority of the week’s press rooms would take place. On the way, I passed a Starbucks that also got into the Comic-Con spirit.

My first press room was for the upcoming NBC series The Player. At the roundtable, we got to speak with executive producer John Rogers as well as cast members Wesley Snipes and Philip Winchester.

I had some time to kill before my next press room, so I walked around the FX and Adult Swim installations. There were all kinds of things to do for shows like Fargo, American Horror Story: Hotel, The Bastard Executioner, Rick & Morty and more. There were lines for everything, and I didn’t have a lot of time to wait, so I didn’t get a chance to go into any of these. This was at about 2pm in the afternoon, and there was already a line formed for the next day’s Hall H events!

Afterwards, I stopped by Sweet Things Frozen Yogurt for the first time, only to witness the VIP treatment given to Amrie (@mytakeontv) and Curt (@ShowPatrol) I had heard so much about but never thought was really true. They were even given one-of-a-kind gifts by the owners.

My next press room was the massive CBS press room, which included summer shows Extant, Zoo and Under The Dome, upcoming series Limitless and returning show Scorpion. When we got to the table, they had some Scorpion comic books for us (which I assume were handed out at the panel) and a talent cheat sheet. All of us immediately started comparing who was caught up with each of the shows so we would be ready for whomever sat down. While we never got anyone from Extant at our table, we did get to speak with folks for the other shows.

For Zoo, we got to talk with executive producers Josh Applebaum and Jeff Pinkner, and stars James Wolk (“Jackson Oz”) and Nora Arnezeder (“Chloe Tousignant”).

For Under The Dome, we got to speak with stars Mike Vogel (“Dale ‘Barbie’ Barbara”), Colin Ford (“Joe McAlister”) & Marg Helgenberger (“Christine Price”).

For Limitless, we got to talk with executive producer Craig Sweeny (Elementary), director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spiderman 1 & 2) and stars Jake McDorman (American Sniper) & Hill Harper (CSI: NY).

And for Scorpion, we got to talk with with executive producer Nicholas Wootton and stars Robert Patrick (“Cabe Gallo”), Katharine McPhee (“Paige Dineen”), Elyes Gabel (“Walter O’Brien”), Jadyn Wong (“Happy Quinn”) and Eddie Kaye Thomas (“Toby Curtis”).

Next on my agenda, I had a one-on-seven interview with the cast/creators of Syfy’s Dark Matter in the Dark Horse booth on the convention floor. Each interviewer was to be given 5 questions or 5-7 minutes, whichever came first. So Jason (@thetvholic), Tina (@TinaCharlesTV) and I decided to combine our timeslots to get a 15 minute block to interview the cast roundtable style, which worked out really well, except that the series creators who were originally on the interview list were unavailable.

After the interview, I stopped by my hotel to drop off my stuff and head over to check out the MTV Fandom Awards/FandomFest. When you entered the site, you were given a badge, which allowed you to get one free food item and one free drink. The food portions were tiny—a single slider, tiny taco, etc.

While I didn’t stick around for the awards themselves, I did wander around the to see all of the various stations and activities they had set up—there was a ferris wheel, a unicorn (spoiler alert, it wasn’t real), a 3D Scream photo station and more. There were also people walking around handing out various swag, such as glow wands to shake during the awards ceremony, Kit Kats, and more.

After I left the awards, I met up with Jason (@thetvholic), Kate (@theteleverse) and her sister (who were both in Adventure Time costumes) at a podcasters meet-up, where we got some ginormous burgers.
