Primetime Picks… 10/3/17

ABC’s Tuesday comedy block is one of my favorites, and tonight new comedy The Mayor joins the lineup. Courtney Rose (Brandon Micheal Hall, Search Party) is a struggling 27-year-old rapper from California who decides to enter his local mayoral race in order to get some free promotion for his forthcoming album. However, when he ends up beating the incumbent (David Spade, Rules of Engagement), his mother Dina (Yvette Nicole Brown, Community) urges his to take the job seriously, and use his new position to make a difference for his community. Aiding Courtney in this new political endeavor are his best friends Marcel (T.K. Clifton) & Jermaine (Bernard David Jones, Meet the Browns), and Valentina (Lea Michele, Glee, Scream Queens), the former mayor’s campaign manager.

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere—this show has that perfect blend of humor and heart that the ABC comedies are known for. It’s just a fun, family-friendly comedy. I’ve always enjoyed Yvette Nicole Brown’s work, so I’m happy to see her in yet another sitcom—and the same goes for Lea Michelle. This series looks like it will make a great addition to ABC’s Tuesday comedy lineup.

In tonight’s premiere, “Pilot”, Courtney runs for mayor as a publicity stunt and unexpectedly wins the election.

Tonight ABC also adds new drama Kevin (Probably) Saves The World to its Tuesday lineup. Kevin Finn (Jason Ritter, Parenthood) is down-on-his-luck, depressed, and has hit rock bottom, so he moves in with sister Amy (JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Once Upon a Time, Reba) and her teenage daughter Reese (Chloe East, Liv and Maddie). Kevin has become a bit of a self-centered, clueless jerk, but that’s all about to change once he meets Yvette (Kimberly Hebert Gregory, Vice Principals), a warrior for God, who sets him on a mission to save the world, one soul at a time.

I was pleasantly surprised by tonight’s premiere as I was not expecting this series to be so much fun. It kind of reminds me of Joan of Arcadia (which coincidentally also starred Ritter) in its premise and quirkiness. While there is this overriding mission that Kevin accepts, the premiere also establishes a framework that supports case-of-the-week style storytelling, with Kevin finding some new person who needs his help each week. The series will have you laughing one minute and be pulling at your heart strings the next. This looks like the perfect show to close out ABC’s Tuesday nights, and should really fit in well with the comedies to give a solid 3-hour block!

In tonight’s premiere, “Pilot”, Kevin returns home to Texas to crash with his sister and niece and has a strained homecoming. Soon after, he meets a celestial guide who informs him he is a righteous soul meant to protect the world.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording The Middle, Fresh Off the Boat, blackish, This Is Us, Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders, The Mick, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, American Horror Story: Cult, and Chrisley Knows Best.
