Primetime Picks… 10/4/17

Last week ABC kicked off the new seasons of its Wednesday comedies, which includes one of my favorites, The Goldbergs. In the premiere, Erica was headed off to college, but her mother was having trouble saying goodbye. First Beverly made ridiculous demands of Erica’s RA, and then she decided to join Erica for her first night in her dorm room, much to her daughter’s chagrin. Meanwhile, Barry was missing Lainey, who had broken up with him when she left for college, and took his frustrations out on Adam. So Adam, inspired by the film Weird Science, decided to build his brother the perfect new girlfriend, and recruited Jackie to help him.

There were some big shake-ups in last week’s episode, but it still felt like the same fun show. I’m interested to see who will keep Barry in check now that Lainey’s not around to tame his craziness. I’m also curious to see how the series will continue to work Erica into stories with the rest of the family now that she’s away at college–though nothing would ever keep Beverly Goldberg away from her children! One of the highlights of last week’s premiere for me was Adam’s relationship with Jackie–the two of them have a really fun chemistry, and it seemed like their friendship could possibly grow into something more. I just really enjoy this show, and I’m so happy to have this weekly nostalgic dose of the 80’s back on my TV!

In tonight’s episode, “Hogan Is My Grandfather”, Adam decides to make a movie about his grandfather for a class assignment but finds all of Pop’s war stories mundane; Erica confronts Beverly about her mothering style; Beverly worries about teaching Erica and Barry basic life skills.

I’ll also be watching/recording Speechless, Modern Family, American Housewife, Designated Survivor, Survivor, The Blacklist, Worst Cooks in America, You’re the Worst, Liar, Channel Zero: No-End House, and Mr. Mercedes.

For additional suggestions on what to check out tonight—such as Criminal Minds and Chicago P.D.—check out the If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/4/17 post at TVisMyPacifier.com.
