Primetime Picks… 10/30/17

On last week’s episode of The Good Doctor, Shaun saw a young patient named Evan who was the spitting image of his long-deceased brother. Evan’s parents hadn’t told their son that he had cancer, and asked Shaun not to say anything. This reminded Shaun of his own childhood when his brother had asked him to lie to strangers in order to get money to survive on their own. Shaun tried but couldn’t lie to Evan—he wanted to save his “brother”. There was a glimmer of hope as Shaun thought Evan might have been misdiagnosed and that he actually had an extremely rare ailment that was less serious than cancer, but this ultimately proved to be wrong.

I’ve been really enjoying this series—it does a great job of balancing interesting medical cases with the drama of this intelligent but socially impaired young man trying to prove himself. They’ve also done an excellent job of weaving in related backstory from Shaun’s childhood to parallel the cases or situations he’s dealing with in the present. I didn’t even realize until last week that the series is actually a remake of a Korean series that ran for 20 episodes a few years ago. I checked out some clips on YouTube, and it’s remarkable how similar the two series look!

In tonight’s episode, “Not Fake”, Shaun and Claire devise an experimental procedure capable of saving a young groom’s leg and life, but the patient’s loved ones must learn to work together. Meanwhile, Jared struggles to connect with a patient whose scars may prove too deep to overcome.

Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording Superior Donuts, Me, Myself & I, Lucifer, The Gifted and Supergirl.
