Primetime Picks… 11/1/17

Tonight the second season of the horror/comedy Stan Against Evil premieres on IFC. Last season we were introduced to ornery Stanley Miller (John C. McGinley, Scrubs), the disgruntled former sheriff of a small New Hampshire town that was built on the site of a massive 17th century witch burning. Ever since, Willard’s Mill has been haunted by 172 demons and a deadly curse that has taken the life of every town sheriff…except Stan. When Evie Barret (Janet Varney, Dinner and a Movie, The Legend of Korra) moved in and took over as sheriff, she quickly learned what was going on, and teamed up with Stan to help defend the town from the evil onslaught. As the first season came to a close, the man in charge of these deadly spirits, constable Thaddeus Eccles, had captured Evie and transported her to the netherworld, where he had evil plans for her.

Can Stan find a way to rescue Evie in time, and figure out how to stop Eccles? What other deadly spirits will try to harm the residents of Willard’s Mill this season, and what kind of zaniness will they bring with them? I really enjoy of this show blends a fun creature-of-the-week with an overall story arc, and also how it finds an entertaining blend of humor and horror. I’m surprised the season didn’t start a little sooner to lead up to Halloween, but folks should still be in horror mode, and I look forward to another fun ride of 8 more episodes.

In tonight’s first episode, “Black Hat Society Part 1”, Stan begins to solve the mystery of Evie’s disappearance and along the way, he meets the descendants of a Wiccan coven known as the Black Hat Society; Stan and the coven discover a disturbing way to bring Evie home.. Then, in “Black Hat Society Part 2”, Stan travels back in time to save Evie, not a moment too soon, as she’s in a high stakes situation; Evie’s rescue hinges on whether or not Stan can sacrifice a trusted friend in the modern day.

Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, Speechless, Modern Family, American Housewife, Designated Survivor, Survivor, The Blacklist, Riverdale, You’re the Worst, The Shannara Chronicles, and Mr. Robot.
