Primetime Picks… 12/13/17

Last week History kicked off the exciting new series Knightfall, which follows the exploits of the Templar Knights in France in the early 14th century. In the premiere, the knights tried to protect the holy land from an attack, but were forced to abandon their stronghold in Acre, and in the process, they lost the Holy Grail to the sea. Cut to 15 years later and the knights are now in Paris, where they are welcome guests of the King. There is some uneasiness in the city between the Christians and the Jews, but the knights do not get involved in city matters. The King is having financial issues, and so his right hand man, De Nogaret, suggests taxing the Jews to raise the money, but he refuses. Meanwhile, Master Templar Godfrey receives a mysterious signal and quickly leaves the city, putting Brother Landry in charge. During his journey, Godfrey comes under attack by the Highwaymen. A young farmer named Parsifal comes to his aid, but Godfrey’s wounds are too great. Before he dies, Godfrey hands his sword to the young man and tells him to give it to Landry in Paris. Parcifal has never even left his own town before, but says goodbye to his fiancee and heads off to Paris.

In France, Landry ignores his vow of chastity, sneaking into a window for a tryst with a woman named Joan. Meanwhile, in the broad daylight of the city square, a Jewish man attacks and kills a Christian. Later, Joan overhears De Nogaret explaining his plot to get the Jews kicked out of the city so that his men can attack and rob them on the roads. Joan lets Landry know what she heard, and the knights arrive in time to prevent the slaughter. When Parcifal arrives in the city, he hands over the sword, and heads back home to help some knights retrieve Godfrey’s body, but he finds that his fiancee has been murdered. Meanwhile, one of the knights discovers a hidden compartment in Godfrey’s sword, which provides the clue that the Grail is somewhere in France. And in the biggest shocking turn of events, we finally meet the Queen…and it’s Joan!

I really enjoyed the premiere of Knightfall and look forward to seeing more of this show. The premiere set up a lot of political intrigue and mystery. What will the King do if he finds out that Landry has been sleeping with his wife? Who left the signal for Godfrey and where was he headed when he was killed? How did the men who killed Godfrey know his name and where to find him? Was De Nogaret behind it, and what other evil plots does he have up his sleeve? Will the Templars find the Grail? Will they return to reclaim the Holy Land? And what lies ahead for Parcifal, will he now join the knights? This show should pair well with Vikings for an exciting two hours of period drama on History!

In tonight’s episode, “Find Us the Grail”, Landry and Parsifal search for a killer. Meanwhile, the unexpected arrival of Pope Boniface in Paris threatens De Nogaret’s carefully laid plans.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, Speechless, Modern Family, American Housewife, Designated Survivor, Survivor, Riverdale, MythBusters, Happy!, The Librarians, and Mr. Robot.
