Tonight Syfy launches the new series Krypton. 200 years before the birth of Kal-El (aka Superman) and the destruction of his home planet, there was political and spiritual turmoil on planet Krypton. In Kandor City, everything is controlled by The Council and the mysterious golden-faced Voice of Rao. They decide who is a member of what guild/profession, control what ranks are given, and declare who will “bind” with whom. However, there are those who want to put an end to this tyranny. The power of The Council is being threatened both by outside forces as well as a underground terrorist group inside the city, known as Black Zero.

When Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe, The Halcyon)—the future grandfather of the Man of Steel—was a young boy, he witnessed his grandfather being tried for treason for being a part of a revolution against this tyranny. His grandfather was executed, and his family ostracized, stripped of its rights, rank and privileges, and sent to live underground in The Outlands. Fourteen years later, Seg-El has become a quick-witted, street-wise young man. He and best friend Kem (Rasmus Hardiker, Your Highness) always have some sort of money-making scheme in the works. However, Seg-El’s world is suddenly turned upside down when he is visited by a mysterious man named Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos, Dark Matter, The Vampire Diaries), who claims to be an Earthling from the future, and warns him that something is coming to wipe out his entire bloodline. Now Seg-El must find a way to restore his family’s honor, and protect the ones he loves and the future from both the dangers that lurk inside Kandor City as well as the unknown forces headed his way.

The series also stars Blake Ritson (Indian Summers), Georgina Campbell (Broadchurch), Elliot Cowan (Da Vinci’s Demons), Ann Ogbomo (World War Z), Wallis Day (Will), Aaron Pierre (Tennison) and Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones).

I really enjoyed tonight’s premiere. We usually only get to see what Krypton is like in the moments before Superman is sent off and the planet explodes. So this is a new look at this class-based society, and the internal and external strife that may have eventually led to the planet’s demise. We are also introduced to several members of the Zod family, and will see how their lives are intertwined with the Els, which should be very interesting given the relationship that we known will exist between General Zod and Kal-El in the future. I look forward to seeing what evils from the future are headed Seg-El’s way, and how he deals with the dangers that already surround him in the city.

In tonight’s premiere, “Pilot”, Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El, learns Krypton is in danger of being destroyed so that his future grandson will never be born.

Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, Modern Family, American Housewife, Designated Survivor, Survivor, The X-Files, 9-1-1, Life Sentence, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, Schitt’s Creek, and The Magicians.
