Primetime Picks… 3/26/18

Tonight AMC airs the two-hour premiere of the new series The Terror. The series is a thriller inspired by the real 1845 expedition by two Royal Navy ships that left England looking for the Northwest Passage through the Arctic. Despite being the most technological ships of their time, the ships and their crew mysteriously vanished without a trace. The drama follows this doomed expedition, led by Sir John Franklin (Ciarán Hinds, Game of Thrones), a man who makes Titanic-like decisions to proceed with the expedition despite evidence that conditions may be too dangerous. And the captains of his two ships, Francis Crozier (Jared Harris, Mad Men) and James Fitzjames (Tobias Menzies, Outlander), don’t like one another, and are always at odds. As the ships come across a seemingly impenetrable sea of ice blocking their path, the crew starts to see foreboding visions, and faces the threats of disease, dwindling resources, and starvation, while a mysterious, monstrous force starts picking them off one by one. The cast also includes Paul Ready (Fortitude), Adam Nagaitis (Happy Valley), Nive Nielsen, Ian Hart (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone), and Trystan Gravelle (Mr Selfridge).

Last night AMC aired a special preview of the first hour of tonight’s premiere, hidden as the second half of a 2-hour episode of The Walking Dead in the programming guide, so unless you watched/recorded The Walking Dead, you wouldn’t have even known it was airing. The first hour introduces the characters, and gives a few flashbacks to the character’s lives before the expedition. At the same time, it slowly builds some of the mystery and tension of the the situation. However, it looks like things will really kick into high gear in the second half of tonight’s premiere, which I’m looking forward to.

Today AMC has made the entire first season available to AMC Premiere subscribers for binging, but will continue to air the series weekly for those of us who don’t subscribe. (This looks like it could be a good show for binging!)

In tonight’s premiere, “Go for Broke; Gore”, An accident at sea cripples a Royal Navy expedition 200 miles from finding the Northwest Passage, forcing its captains to make a dire choice.

Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording The Good Doctor, Good Girls, The Resident, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, iZombie, UnREAL, Final Space, and The Alienist.
