Tonight NBC’s hilarious true crime spoof, Trial & Error, returns for its second season, and a brand new case. In the first season, young New York lawyer Josh Segal headed to the small Southern town of East Peck, SC to defend an eccentric client who was accused of murdering his wife. Josh set up an office behind a taxidermy shop, and hired two oddballs to help him with his case. His lead investigator was the simple-minded Dwayne Reed, a former police officer in the town, and his assistant/researcher was Anne Flatch, a woman who seems to suffer from an endless list of rare and bizarre disorders. Josh found himself up against tough Assistant DA Carol Anne Keane, a woman with her own eccentricities, as well as a passion for Josh.

In the second season, which is title “Trial & Error: Lady, Killer”, Josh and his crew are back at it again, tackling a brand new case. Lavinia Peck-Foster (Kristin Chenoweth) is a beloved member of the East Peck community, and so when the body of her dead husband is found stuffed in a suitcase in the back of her car, she seeks Josh’s help to get her off—though it seems like the laws don’t really pertain to her anyway.

I absolutely loved the first season of Trial & Error. Each episode was filled with non-stop laughs, whether it was the constant witty banter between the characters, the physical humor with whatever ailment Anne admits to having that episode, or the multiple layers of jokes in every scene. The writers did an excellent job at not only parodying other true crime TV programs, but also providing a wacky, original sitcom. One thing I really enjoy is that a lot of this show is grounded in fact. The cases are based on real cases, Anne’s crazy disorders are real, and some of East Peck’s backwards laws are ones that actually existed.

I’ve seen tonight’s premiere, and I’m happy to say that the show doesn’t miss a beat—it’s still just as fun and entertaining as ever. While you could probably jump right in with season 2 because it’s a new case, viewers who have seen the first season, will have a benefit of the rich backstory of the town and characters that was developed over the first season. Kristin Chenoweth is an excellent addition to the series, and fits in perfectly with the offbeat citizens of East Peck. I highly recommend watching tonight’s premiere, and if you haven’t seen the first season yet, it’s well worth checking out!

In tonight’s first episode, “The Suitcase”, Josh Segal and Associates get their first case: defending Lavinia Peck Foster, the eccentric First Lady of East Peck, who was found with her husband Edgar’s corpse in a suitcase in her trunk. Then, in “The Timeline”, Judge Kamiltow rules that Lavinia must stand trial for the murder of her husband; and Josh and the team try to poke holes in the timeline of the case Carol Anne will present. But when a clock is determined to be the murder weapon, they are forced to seek help from two unlikely sources the convicted murderer of Lavinia’s brother and the host of a popular murder podcast called “M Town.”
