Blu-ray Review: SUPER TROOPERS 2

Jul 29, 2018 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

Super Troopers 2 picks up several years after the first film. Our favorite team of misfit police officers have been fired from the Spurbury Police Department after a ride along with Fred Savage went horribly wrong. (We don’t actually get to see the details of this incident until a stinger at the end of the film.) Mac (Steve Lemme) and Rabbit (Rik Stolhanske) are now working in construction, with Farva (Kevin Heffernan) as their foreman. Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar) has grown out a massive beard and now works in logging, and Foster (Paul Soter) now lives with his girlfriend Ursula, who is the Spurbury Police Chief.

The guys decide to reunite for a fishing trip in Canada with their former boss, Captain O’Hagen (Brian Cox). However, when they arrive at the cabin, they learn that the Captain had an ulterior motive with the trip. During a recent land survey, it was discovered that the Canadian town of St. Georges du Laurent is actually within Vermont’s borders, and so Governor Jessman would like to set up a temporary police department to take over the duties from the Mounties. She will reinstate the troopers on a trial basis. If they prove to be successful in their jobs, the officers can return to being full time state troopers. Needless to say, the former-Canadians living in the area aren’t too pleased to see the Americans take over. Town mayor Guy Le Franc (Rob Lowe), cultural attaché Genevieve Aubois (Emmanuelle Chriqui), and the three Canadian Mounties who used to be in charge of the area (Hayes MacArthur, Tyler Labine, Will Sasso) put on fake smiles and reluctantly agree to help with the transition. However, it’s soon clear that they aren’t going to make things easy for the troopers. And the situation gets even more complicated when the guys discover that that someone is taking advantage of the situation to smuggle drugs, cell phones, and assault rifles into the U.S.. Can the troopers prove they are worthy of their jobs, or will they just fall back into their old habits? And can they figure out who is behind the smuggling ring?

Super Troopers 2 recaptures the same fun and spirit of the original movie while also still feeling fresh and new. The dynamics between the officers is pretty much the same—even down to Farva once again being begrudgingly stuck behind the radio. It’s not long before the guys are back to harassing drivers on the highway with their stupid games. Except this time, there are some Canadian twists to the tourists and the jokes. In addition, there is also an ongoing passive-aggressive feud between the Mounties and the troopers.

Having re-watched the first film just before checking out the sequel, I found that it is primarily a series of comedy sketches that are loosely connected. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and cetainly worked for the first film. While there is definitely some of the same feeling this second time around, the sequel does have a bit more of an over-arching storyline that gives it a more cohesive plot than just officers behaving badly. Due to this, I think I enjoyed the sequel a little more than the original.

Fans of the original Super Troopers should definitely enjoy this sequel as it’s very much more of the same. And for those who haven’t seen the original, there is no reason why you couldn’t just watch this second one right meow. There are some callbacks to jokes in the first film, but the characters and their adventures in the first movie are pretty well summed up at the start of this movie.

FOX’s Blu-ray release provides a solid audio and video presentation. There is a scene that opens the film that is quite grainy at times, but this was not indicative of the quality of the rest of the movie. After this scene, the picture remains quite crisp, clean and detailed. The audio track provides clear dialogue throughout the film, and makes some use of the stereo and surround channels to make scenes a bit more immersive. The Blu-ray and DVD discs contain the same collection of bonus features—a 40-minute behind-the-scenes feature, 20 minutes of deleted/extended scenes, a promotional featurette and trailers. The discs comes packed in a standard HD keepcase with a cardboard slipcover. The release also includes a Movies Anywhere-compatible HD digital copy of the film.
