Primetime Picks… 10/3/18

Last week ABC launched the new drama A Million Little Things. In the opener, three guys discovered that their friend Jon (Ron Livingston) had committed suicide, inexplicably leaping from the balcony of his Boston office building. Musician Eddie (David Giuntoli, Grimm) is 7 years sober thanks to a conversation he had with Jon while trapped in an elevator, but he was secretly cheating on his wife Katherine (Grace Park, Battlestar Galactica), having an affair with Jon’s wife Delilah (Stephanie Szostak, Satisfaction). In fact, he was in bed with Delilah when Jon made his final phone call to him. Aspiring filmmaker Rome (Romany Malco, Weeds, Blunt Talk), depressed about the state of his career, had taken a mouthful of pills when he got the call about Jon, so in a way, Jon’s death saved his life. Also, Jon’s final act was to arrange a real-estate deal for a property for Rome’s chef wife Regina (Christina Marie Moses, Condor, The Originals) to open a restaurant. Finally, Gary is a breast cancer survivor who’s in remission, but is always worried about a relapse. On the day of the funeral, Jon met free spirited Maggie in his survivor support group, and the two hit it off. While Maggie seems happy and well, we discover that she hasn’t been taking her cancer meds. Also someone who may be harboring secrets is Jon’s secretary Ashley (Christina Ochoa, Animal Kingdom, Blood Drive)—before he jumped, Jon left Ashley his cell phone and a folder with his wife’s name on it, and later she could be seen deleting files from his computer.

I really enjoyed last week’s premiere. The series is a solid drama—the first episode set up a lot of places the story can go and introduced a lot of questions to be answered! What made Jon leap off that building? Did he know about his wife’s affair? What is in the folder he left with his secretary, and why was she deleting files? He was seen as an infallible God by his friends—did he have some dark secret? Also, each of the other guys has his own secrets. Will Eddie continue his affair, and will his wife find out? What was in the phone message Jon left for Eddie as his final words before he jumped? Will Rome tell his wife about his suicide attempt? Will Gary’s cancer return? Is Maggie hiding something that would affect her blossoming relationship with Gary?

In tonight’s episode, “band of dads”, the group tries to be there for Sophie as an upcoming father-daughter dance recital approaches; against her better judgment, Maggie agrees to have Rome in for a therapy session; Danny confesses a secret to Gary; Maggie receives an unexpected visitor.

Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording The Goldbergs, American Housewife, Modern Family, Single Parents, Survivor, and American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

For additional suggestions on what to check out tonight, including the return of Criminal Minds, and a #OneChicago crossover—Chicago Fire, Chicago Med & Chicago P.D.—check out the If We Controlled Your Remote… 10/3/18 post at TVisMyPacifier.com.
