Sunday is quickly becoming a packed night of TV, but I’m looking forward to checking out tonight’s premiere of Camping on HBO. This new 6-episode comedy is based on a 2016 British series of the same name, and is written/produced by Girls star Lena Dunham and showrunner Jenni Konner. The series stars Jennifer Garner (Alias) and David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch) as Kathryn and Walt, a not-so-happily married couple, who decide to head to the great outdoors to celebrate Walt’s 45th birthday. Things quickly get out of hand, thanks in large part to Kathryn’s overbearing and controlling nature, but also due to uninvited guest, free-spirited “peace-maker” Jandice (Juliette Lewis, Secrets and Lies), who joins new boyfriend Miguel (Arturo Del Puerto, The Last Ship). Also joining in on the camping trip are Kathryn’s son Orvis (Duncan Joiner), and her meek sister Carleen (Ione Sky, Say Anything), who brings along her partner Joe (Chris Sullivan, This is Us) and his daughter from a previous marriage, Sol (Cheyenne Haynes, Just Add Magic). And finally, there’s Kathryn’s former best friend Nina-Joy (Janicza Bravo)—who is currently holding a grudge against Katheryn, and she brings along her husband George (Brett Gelman, Another Period), who’s hoping the weekend might help fix his marriage.
In tonight’s premiere, “Pilot”, Kathryn’s “perfect” group camping trip in honor of Walt’s 45th birthday is threatened by tension between Kathryn and her estranged best friend, the unexpected addition of an angry goth teen, and the chaotic arrival of Miguel and his new girlfriend.
Tonight I’ll also be watching/recording God Friended Me, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, Supergirl, Charmed, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, You, and Kidding.
