Blu-ray Review: COMMUNITY – The Complete Series

Nov 05, 2018 Posted by in DVD/Blu-ray, Reviews | Comments

Sarcastic lawyer Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) has been disbarred after lying about his bachelor’s degree—it turns out it was from Columbia, just the country, and not the University. He enrolls at Greendale Community College to finish his degree, but feels like he is better than the other students. When he arrives on campus, Jeff sees hot, blonde activist Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs). In order to get close to her, he pretends to be running a Spanish study group and invites her to join him in the library. However, Jeff’s plan to get some alone time with Britta is ruined when he learns that she invited the nerdy pop-culture obsessed Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) to join his fake study group. And to make matters worse, Abed shows up with even more friends from Spanish class—uber-religious single mother Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown), compulsive over-achiever Annie Edison (Alison Brie), former high school quarterback/prom king Troy Barnes (Donald Glover), and cynical, slightly racist/misogynist retired millionaire Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase).

Jeff had also planned to scam his way into passing his classes by getting all the test answers from his former client/teacher Professor Ian Duncan (John Oliver). But when this falls through, he’s forced to join the study group for real. At Greendale, the faculty is just as odd and diverse as its students. The oddest of them all is Dean Craig Pelton (Jim Rash), head of the college, who is constantly trying to be friends with the study group (and flirting with Jeff). The dean is constantly coming up with crazy ideas on how to improve the school’s stature, make things more fun, and ensure everything is politically correct. His ideas are often horrible, and end up making things worse. And speaking of horrible, there’s Spanish teacher Ben Chang (Ken Jeong). Chang is a bit unstable, and is usually at odds with the study group.

Over the course of the series, the group becomes more than friends, hanging out with one another and going on all kinds of wacky adventures both inside and outside of school.

I had forgotten just how fun this show was until I started revisiting the episodes on this Blu-ray set. Community is one of the most creatively written and executed comedies. The series has a lot of fun experimenting with new ways to tell stories. Whether it’s paying homage to specific action movies, documentaries or TV shows, or just making a bottle episode or clip show, it always does so in a fun, unique way. The cast is wonderful, and works great as an ensemble. No matter who gets paired up for the storylines, it always seems to work, and yields some comedy gold. The series did a great job of revisiting, and expanding its world over the course of the series, often calling back to small, seemingly insignificant things mentioned in earlier episodes. The series ultimately ran for 6 seasons, but alas no movie as Abed had hoped for early on in the show’s run.

  • Season 1 (2009-10, 25 episodes, NBC):
The season that introduced viewers to this crazy world, and the even crazier characters that reside in it. The study group is taking Spanish 101 taught by professor Ben Chang (Ken Jeong). This season offers a fun parody of Goodfellas, but the most memorable episode is “Modern Warfare”, also known as the “paintball episode”, which is a hilarious homage to action/horror film.

Recurring characters include: Dean Craig Pelton (Jim Rash), Professor Ian Duncan (John Oliver), Vaughn Miller (Eric Christian Olsen), Professor Eustice Whitman (John Michael Higgins)

Notable guest stars: Jack Black, Blake Clark, Tony Hale, Anthony Michael Hall, Sharon Lawrence, Lee Majors, Katharine McPhee, Patton Oswalt, Lisa Rinna, and Owen Wilson
  • Season 2 (2010–11, 24 episodes, NBC):
The study group is now taking Spanish 201, still with professor Ben Chang (Ken Jeong). The fun and creativity continues with a Rankin/Bass-style stop motion animated holiday episode, a bottle episode, a The Office style confessional/documentary episode, a clip show full of clips from episodes that don’t exist, and a 2-part follow-up to the paintball episode.

Recurring characters include: Dean Craig Pelton (Jim Rash), Professor Ian Duncan (John Oliver), Leonard Briggs (Richard Erdman), Garrett Lambert (Erik Charles Nielsen), Vicki Jacobson (Danielle Kaplowitz), Neil (Charley Koontz), Magnitude (Luke Youngblood), City College Dean Spreck (Jordan Black), Andre Bennett (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), June Bauer (Betty White), Helicopter Pilot/Tiny Man (Andy Dick)

Notable guest stars: LeVar Burton, Drew Carey, Rob Corddry, Eliza Coupe, Hilary Duff, Anthony Michael Hall, Josh Holloway, Amber Lancaster, Brit Marling, Jerry Minor, Tig Notaro, Patton Oswalt, Maite Schwartz, Stephen Tobolowsky, Paul F. Tompkins, Matt Walsh
  • Season 3 (2011–12, 22 episodes, NBC):
Dean Pelton became a regular character this season, and had a new foe in the head of Greendale’s air conditioning repair school Vice Dean Laybourne (John Goodman). The study group takes Biology 101, taught by the intense Professor Marshall Kane (Michael K. Williams). Troy and Abed move in together and host a housewarming party which introduces the idea of the alternate timelines of the study group, and the concept of “the darkest timeline”. The season’s more creative episodes include a Ken Burns’ Civil War parody about pillow forts versus mattress forts, filming a new commercial for Greendale, a holiday musical, a Law & Order parody, an episode were the group gets trapped in a video game, and integrating sponsor Subway into the episodes. There was also a less successful storyline about Chang becoming a security guard and plotting to take over the school.

Recurring characters include: Leonard Briggs (Richard Erdman), Garrett Lambert (Erik Charles Nielsen), Vicki Jacobson (Danielle Kaplowitz), Murray the AC Repairman (Dan Bakkedahl), Neil (Charley Koontz), Magnitude (Luke Youngblood), Andre Bennett (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), Mel Rodriguez (Sgt. Nunez)

Notable guest stars: Larry Cedar, Rob Corddry, Keith David, Giancarlo Esposito, Kirk Fox, Jeff Garlin, Luis Guzmán, Leslie Hendrix, Michael Ironside, Taran Killam, Travis Schuldt, Martin Starr, French Stewart
  • Season 4 (2013, 13 episodes, NBC):
In this season Chang returned to Greendale, but with “Changnesia”, thinking he was someone named “Kevin”. This season also saw the exit of Chevy Chase, and was the first without series creator Dan Harmon. Some complained about this, but I thought this season still had some of my favorite, most creative episodes. Some of the season’s more memorable episodes took us to InSpecTiCon to see the Inspector Spacetime convention, another turned our favorite characters into puppets, and there was a Freaky Friday body swap between Troy and Abed. This season also saw the return of the “darkest timeline”.

Recurring characters include: Leonard Briggs (Richard Erdman), Garrett Lambert (Erik Charles Nielsen), Vicki Jacobson (Danielle Kaplowitz), Neil (Charley Koontz), Magnitude (Luke Youngblood), Professor Cornwallis (Malcolm McDowell), City College Dean Spreck (Jordan Black)

Notable guest stars: Jason Alexander, Sara Bareilles, James Brolin, Adam DeVine, Chris Diamantopoulos, Giancarlo Esposito, Sophie B. Hawkins, Tricia Helfer, Brie Larson, Natasha Leggero, Matt Lucas, Fred Willard, Luke Perry, Jennie Garth
  • Season 5 (2014, 13 episodes, NBC):
Series creator Dan Harmon returned as showrunner for the fifth season. This season saw Donald Glover leaving the series, the return of John Oliver as Ian Duncan, and Jonathan Banks joined the cast as criminology professor Buzz Hickey. The season opens with Jeff returning to Greendale a year after graduation, where he ends up teaching. Some of the season’s highlights include an animated homage to G.I. Joe, an episode where the group plays an old-west themed VCR game, and the study group playing another game of Dungeons & Dragons.

Recurring characters include: Leonard Briggs (Richard Erdman), Garrett Lambert (Erik Charles Nielsen), Vicki Jacobson (Danielle Kaplowitz), Neil (Charley Koontz), Magnitude (Luke Youngblood), Rachel (Brie Larson)

Notable guest stars: Steve Agee, Paget Brewster, LeVar Burton, Rob Corddry, David Cross, Chris Elliott, Nathan Fillion, Ben Folds, Gina Gershon, Vince Gilligan, Walton Goggins, Tim Heidecker as Roger (“App Development and Condiments”)
Mitchell Hurwitz as Koogler (“App Development and Condiments”)
Jen Kirkman, Katie Leclerc, Michael McDonald, Kumail Nanjiani, B.J. Novak, Robert Patrick, Brian Posehn, Questlove, Amber Tamblyn, Eric Wareheim, Paul Williams
  • Season 6 (2015, 13 episodes, Yahoo Screen):
This sixth and final season (sorry, there was no “and a movie”) aired on Yahoo! Screen. Joining the remaining original cast members were Paget Brewster as Francesca “Frankie” Dart, a consultant hired to help improve Greendale, and Keith David as Elroy Patashnik, a failed inventor who decides to enroll at Greendale to reinvent his life. Yvette Nicole Brown only appeared in 2 episodes this season due to a family emergency. The season highlights included one final paintball episode, an RV road trip, and a look at a hypothetical seventh season in the series finale.

Recurring characters include: Leonard Briggs (Richard Erdman), Garrett Lambert (Erik Charles Nielsen), Vicki Jacobson (Danielle Kaplowitz), George Perry (Martin Mull), Deb Perry (Lesley Ann Warren)

Notable guest stars: Steve Agee, Matt Berry, Matt Besser, Brooke Burns, Jay Chandrasekhar, Wayne Federman, Nathan Fillion, Matt Gourley, Seth Green, Steve Guttenberg, Mitchell Hurwitz, O-Lan Jones, Lisa Loeb, Jason Mantzoukas, Kumail Nanjiani, Randall Park, Justin Roiland, Danielle Schneider, Travis Schuldt, Brian Van Holt, Steven Weber, Billy Zane, Erin McGathy

Mill Creek Entertainment has put together a nice collection of all six seasons of Community in a Complete Series Blu-ray box. Sony had previously released each of the seasons on DVD, but this is the first time the show has been released on Blu-ray. The entire series is spread across twelve discs, with two discs per season. The discs comes packed in three multi-disc HD keepcases, with the two discs for each season stacked on one side of a keepcase. The keepcases are placed inside an outer cardboard box.

The first few seasons squeeze 12-13 episodes plus extras onto each disc, and the picture quality suffers a little at times. For the most part the picture looks fantastic, but occasionally there is a bit of static or the video looks a little over-compressed. This isn’t too much of problem, and didn’t distract from my overall enjoyment of the episodes. The audio track is excellent, providing clear dialogue and making nice use of the stereo and surround channels to add ambiance and excitement to what’s happening on screen. This is especially evident in action-packed episodes like “Modern Warfare”.

As for the bonus material, there are no new supplements exclusive to this release, but Mill Creek has ported over nearly all of the bonus material from the original DVD releases, which includes commentaries on every episode, as well as outtakes, deleted/extended scenes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and more. There is so much great material here, over 2 full days worth! The only feature that was dropped from the original first season DVD is a 5-minute highlight reel. However, from the second season DVD, the dropped features include a making-of featurette for “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas”, full-length Storyboard Animatic and In-Process Animatic versions of that animated Christmas episode, and a behind-the-scenes featurette for “A Fistful of Paintballs”/”For a Few Paintballs More”. I really wish Mill Creek had found a way to include these, even if they had to put them on the sixth season discs.

While this release does include the “Study Break” series of webisodes, there were several other series of webisodes produced over the years that have not been included on this release: “The 5 As of Greendale”, “The Community College Chronicles”, “Spanish Videos”, “Road to the Emmys”, “Dean Pelton’s Office Hours”, “Abed’s Master Key”, “Miracle on Jeff’s Street ” and “Abed and the Dean Share a Moment in a Honda”. These other series were never made available on the original DVD releases either, so it’s not surprising, but it would have been great if they had somehow found their way onto this “Complete Series” set.

All told, this is still an excellent box set that is sure to please fans, and a great way for new viewers to experience the series.

Must Own

Community is one of the most creative TV shows, always pushing the boundaries and trying crazy new things. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t, but it’s always interesting and fun. There are so many great, classic episodes of TV in this collection. The picture and sound quality of Mill Creek’s Blu-ray set is quite good, and the discs are loaded with bonus features. While there is no new bonus material that has been created specifically for this release, there is literally over 2 days worth of bonus material included, ported from the previous DVD releases. Fans of the series will definitely want to pick up this Blu-ray release (though hold onto your original second season DVD as some of the original featurettes have been dropped from this release). And for those interested in checking out the series, Mill Creek’s Complete Series set is a fantastic way to do so!
