San Diego Comic-Con 2019 – Day 3 Recap

Jul 21, 2019 Posted by in Features | Comments

My Saturday, the third official day of San Diego Comic-Con 2019, was another packed one, with loads of press rooms, a panel, a pair of offsite activations, and a party!

Supergirl Press Room

Saturday is usually loaded with the WB superhero shows, and I started things off with an early press room for Supergirl, which returns this Fall for its fifth season on The CW. Lots of cast members showed up for the press room, but time ran out before we got everyone at our table. In the end, we got to speak with executive producers Jessica Queller, Robert L. Rovner & Sarah Schechter, and stars Melissa Benoist (“Kara Danvers”), Andrea Brooks (“Eve Teschmacher”), Katie McGrath (“Lena Luthor”), Chyler Leigh (“Alex Danvers”) & Azie Tesfai (“Kelly Olsen”).

The Good Place Press Room

Probably my most anticipated press room of the con, I was really excited for The Good Place, which will return for its final season this Fall on NBC. We got to speak with most of the folks who were in the press room, including executive producer Drew Goddard, and stars Marc Evan Jackson (“Shawn”), Jameela Jamil (“Tahani Al-Jamil”), Manny Jacinto (“Jason Mendoza”), Ted Danson (“Michael”), D’Arcy Carden (“Janet”), William Jackson Harper (“Chidi Anagonye”) & Kristen Bell (“Eleanor Shellstrop”).

The Flash Press Room

Back to the WB superhero shows, I headed to the press room for The Flash, which returns this fall for a sixth season. In the press room, we got to speak with stars Danielle Panabaker (“Caitlin Snow”), Grant Gustin (“Barry Allen”), Tom Cavanagh (“Harry Wells”), Candice Patton (“Iris West”) & Carlos Valdes (“Cisco Ramon”).

Arrow Press Room

The superhero shows continued with the press room for Arrow, which returns this fall for its eith/final season. In the press room, we got to speak with executive producer Marc Guggenheim, director James Bamford, and stars Juliana Harkavy (“Dinah Drake”) & Katie Cassidy (“Laurel Lance”). Unfortunately I had to duck out of the room before we got to talk with the last person, Mr. Oliver Queen himself, Stephen Amell.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Press Room

Another one of the press rooms I had been looking forward to was NBC’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which returns this fall for a seventh season. In the press room, we got to speak with
executive producers Luke Del Tredici & Dan Goor, and stars Terry Crews (“Terry Jeffords”), Joe Lo Truglio (“Charles Boyle”), Andy Samberg (“Jake Peralta”) & Melissa Fumero (“Amy Santiago”). We were running out of time, so we were told to run over to another table where they were talking with Dirk Blocker (“Hitchcock”).

NBC Party

I finished out the night with another party, this time the annual NBC party, which was held inside the Brooklyn Nine-Nine activation. When we walked into the squad room, they had themed drinks available and music was playing. Folks were volunteering to help you get your picture taken behind a desk, etc. Then we proceeded outside, where it was a lot more cramped. There was a separate bar and servers walking around with appetizers. We also had free reign over the Seinfeld trivia vending machine that was outside the activation, so I made sure to get some Junior Mints and other swag.

Some of the NBC comedy cast members were mingling and talking with folks. We saw Marc Evan Jackson, D’Arcy Carden, and William Jackson Harper from The Good Place, and also Lauren Ash from Superstore, but they never made it over to where we were standing. We did get to talk for a while with Manny Jacinto, who plays Jason Mendoza on The Good Place. He was a really fun, nice guy. I was standing with someone named Jason, who asked Manny for a photo. Manny smiled when he heard that his name was Jason since that’s his characters name. So after I took their photo, I said “My name isn’t Jason, but could I get a photo as well?”, and without missing a beat, Manny responded with “Is it Jianyu?” (his character’s fake identity in the first season of the series). There was a pause and then everyone had a laugh and Jason took our photo. Later on Terry Crews from Brooklyn Nine-Nine showed up and was doing some drive by selfies as he made his way through the crowd. So I positioned myself in his path and had the phone out. He would make eye contact with people as he was walking, simply saying, “Are you ready?” and then leaned in for the selfie before heading off back into the crowd to the next person.

Despite the cramped nature, it was a really fun party. It was great to meet up with some other press folks I hadn’t seen in a while, and meet some of the celebs. The food was really good, especially the Cubano sandwiches and the giant creme brûlée cupcakes.

After the party, I headed back to my hotel to start packing things up to prepare for my departure from San Diego the next day.
