Tonight, Syfy’s action-packed vampire drama Van Helsing returns for its fourth season. As the third season came to a close, Vanessa was on a mission to eliminate the fourth Elder, but as she arrived at Renfield House, she learned that she and Sam would be battling it out to become the final Elder. As part of the process, the Oracle forced each of them to kill someone they loved—for Sam it was Mohamad, and for Vanessa, it was her sister. Scarlett offered herself up to Vanessa, sacrificing herself for the greater good. However, the Oracle selected Sam and he started growing massive horns and big pointy ears, becoming a full-fledged demon. But Vanessa wasn’t going to be alone for the impending battle—her great great grandmother Lillian, who has been in a state of limbo for over a century, was suddenly awakened, and the two braced for battle.

Meanwhile, at the Denver Blak Tek compound, Doc discovered that there was something special about her blood (though we were not told what this is). She had also developed some new poisoned bullets that were supposed to be able to kill the vampires. Julius and the others were about to test this theory as the compound came under attack by Scab and the Daywalkers, which was convenient in a way as Julius was anxious to take down Scab and avenge Frankie.

The fourth season picks up immediately where we left off as the fighting begins on both fronts. Who will survive these battles, and what lies ahead for these folks? Even if Vanessa manages to survive, Axel blames her for Scarlett’s death and will likely be out for revenge. I wonder what is so special about Doc’s blood—I mean Julius and Vanessa both have the ability to heal themselves, and Vanessa’s blood can even turn vampires human!

It should be another exciting season, and since the series has a new showrunner this year, there may be a bit of a reboot coming, with the introduction of some new characters. In tonight’s premiere we meet Violet (Keeya King), and later this season we’ll be introduced to several new characters, including Dracula (Tricia Helfer, BSG), Jax (Nicole Muñoz, Defiance), and an unknown character played by The 100‘s Richard Harmon.

In tonight’s premiere, “Dark Destiny”, with the amulet in hand, Vanessa and Lily escape from Elder Sam and return to the real world.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I got a chance to talk about the series with the new showrunner, some of the producers, and some of the new and returning cast. You can watch my interview videos from the press room here.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording The Politician, American Housewife, and Fresh Off the Boat.
