Primetime Picks… 11/5/19

Today the dark comedy-drama The End of the F***ing World returns for its second season on Netflix. In the first season, we meet 17-year-old James (Alex Lawther), who’s a bit of a psychopath. He enjoys killing animals and decides he wants to see what killing a human is like. He sets his sights on rebellious classmate Alyssa (Jessica Barden), so when she suggests they run away together, he happily agrees. They play house in a seemingly-empty home, and he starts to fall for her. One day the owner returns and attempts to force himself upon Alyssa. James finally gets his chance to experience killing a human as he stabs the man in the neck. The two end up on the run, on a road trip across England, eventually ending up at the coastside mobile home belonging to the father who abandoned Alyssa. Alyssa had this idealized view of her father, but when he sees their photos on the news, he calls the cops. As the first season ended it was like a Bonnie & Clyde or Butch & Sundance-like run from the cops, and the sound of a gunshot.

This first season seemed like a nice ending to a complete story, so I was surprised when the show got picked up for a second season. But this happens often to successful “limited series”—if they end up being a huge success, the story gets extended. I really enjoyed the first season and am quite curious to see how they continue this story. When is this second season set in regards to the events of last season? Did anyone die? Are James and Alyssa going to continue to be on the run? I hope this season season can recapture the magic of the first.

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording The Wonderful World of Disney Presents The Little Mermaid Live!, Emergence, This Is Us, The Resident, The Flash, Arrow, The Purge and Treadstone.

For additional suggestions on what to check out tonight, including a new episodes of NCIS: New Orleans & The Misery Index, check out the If We Controlled Your Remote… 11/5/19 post at TVisMyPacifier.com.
