Primetime Picks… 6/11/20

Tonight the new series Don’t joins ABC’s Thursday night game show lineup. The series comes from executive producer Ryan Reynolds, and is hosted by Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation). Each week a new team of four contestants will take on 5 rounds of hilarious physical challenges and trivia as they try to earn up to $100,000. These challenges are inspired by all the countless times we’ve been told “Don’t do this” or “Don’t do that”.

Along the way, the contestants will also have some tough choices to make, such as deciding when it would be most beneficial for them to use the Don’t Push Button—if they push the button and complete the round flawlessly, they will double their money for the round, however, if they press the button and make any mistakes, any money they earn for the round will be halved. At the end of the game, the team gets to keep all of the money they’ve amassed across the five rounds.

Throughout the episode, the unseen Don’tMaster (the voice of Ryan Reynolds) provides hilarious, snarky commentary and one-liners. Plus the game show sometimes breaks the fourth wall, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of in-character host Adam Scott and his crew at work.

What makes this show so entertaining is a combination of the wacky challenges and the over-the-top personalities of the family/friends who make up the team of contestants. Tonight’s premiere, “Don’t Be a Wiseguy”, is a perfect balance of both. The first contestants are the loud, Italian Riley family from Brooklyn, New York—Lisa, David, Jaime and Giuseppe—and they are hilarious! It’s almost a shame that they need to pick new contestants each week. This foursome find themselves answering trivia to prevent getting run over by giant tires in “Don’t Get Tired,” trying not to blink for 60 seconds in “Don’t Blink,” trying to master some spicy food in “Don’t Drink,” trying to identify celebrities with bird-like names in “Don’t Use Fowl Language” and trying to retreive numbers from a giant clock that’s out to get them in “Don’t Get Clocked”.

I thoroughly enjoyed tonight’s premiere, I can’t wait to see more of this crazy game show! It is a wacky, wild hour of TV that should fit perfectly between Holey Moley and To Tell The Truth, giving ABC a really fun and entertaining line-up of game shows for Thursday nights!

Tonight, I’ll also be watching/recording Holey Moley, To Tell the Truth, Broke, and Celebrity Watch Party.
