San Diego Comic-Con 2019 – Day 2 Recap

Jul 20, 2019 Posted by in Features | Comments

My Friday, the second official day of San Diego Comic-Con 2019, was another busy one, with a whole bunch of press rooms, an autograph signing, and a couple parties!

Bless the Hearts Press Room

This Fall, the new animated comedy Bless the Harts joins FOX’s Sunday night line-up following The Simpsons. There were only a few of us in the press room for the round table Q&As, so at first they were going to just have us join the press line. Instead, we got a sit down at the end with two of the show’s stars, Ike Barinholtz & Jillian Bell, as well as series creator Emily Spivey.

Check out our press room interview.

Pennyworth Press Room

Next I went to the press room for the new Epix series Pennyworth, which takes a look at the life and adventures of Alfred Pennyworth, before he became Batman’s butler. We got the chance to talk with executive producers Bruno Heller & Danny Cannon, and stars Jack Bannon (“Alfred Pennyworth”), Ben Aldridge (“Thomas Wayne”), and Paloma Faith (“Bet Sykes”).

Krypton Signing

This year I finally won something in the SDCC exclusives lottery! I picked up my wristband for the Krypton autograph session earlier in the morning before my press rooms. So now I headed back to the convention center and got in line. When they announced that THE star of the series was about to start signing, I sadly realized that we were only getting one cast member. I had assumed that the whole cast would be there, but it was still nice to get to very briefly meet Cameron Cuffe and get a signed poster.

Creepshow Press Room

With autographed poster in hand, I headed back to the Hilton Bayfront for the press room for Shudder’s upcoming Creepshow anthology series reboot. This was the only press room I was doing all weekend that wasn’t allowing video, and in some ways this was a little more relaxing. It allowing me to really engage in the conversation rather than be constantly worrying about constantly fiddling with a video camera. We had some great conversations with showrunner Greg Nicotero, and stars Giancarlo Esposito, Tricia Helfer & DJ Qualls. Adrienne Barbeau was feeling under the weather, so they tried to have her dial in, putting the cell phone in the middle of the table, but it wasn’t easy to hear her.

neXt Press Room

Next I headed to the press room for FOX’s upcoming technology thriller neXt. In the press room, we spoke with creator/executive producer Manny Coto, executive producers/directors Glenn Ficarra & John Requa, and stars Michael Mosley (“CM”), Eve Harlow (“Gina”), Fernanda Andrade, John Slattery & Jason Butler Harner (“Ted LeBlanc”).

I will update this post later when the videos from the press room are posted, closer to the show’s premiere.

Pandora Press Room

The last press room for the day was for the new CW Series Pandora, which just recently premiered last week. We got the chance to talk with showrunner/creator Mark A. Altman, director Steve Hughes, and stars Priscilla Quintana (“Jax”), Oliver Dench (“Xander”), Johann Urb (“Captain Jaworski”), John Harlan Kim (“Greg”) & Tehmina Sunny (“Regan”). The cast has such great chemistry off screen, and this definitely translates into the show—these interviews were a lot of fun.

WB Party/Cocktail Mixer

I was once again fortunate enough to score an invite to the annual Warner Bros. Television party, which is always a good time. Just before taking the elevator up to the roof of the hotel, we were handed a claim ticket. The WB party always has some customizable swag, and this year it was a tote bag. When you first entered the party, there was a station to design and print your tote bag. This bag would come in handy because the party was set up like a carnival, and this was going to be useful for carrying all the swag you could win from playing the carnival games—throwing darts at balloons, water gun races to blow up/pop a ballon, throwing ping pong balls into small glasses, skeeball, and shooting baskets.

There was also lots of food, including hot dogs, hamburgers, mac & cheese, and more. Plus a whole snack/dessert station with hot donuts, popcorn and more. They also had the Banana Splits there, plus the casts from many of the WB shows mingling and chatting with guests. The only person I ended up asking for a photo was Richard Harmon of The 100 (plus the next season of Van Helsing). It was a really fun time as usual, and we stayed until they kicked us out.

By the time the WB party was over, it was too late for us to get into the outdoor screening of The Boys premiere. However, at my hotel the Den of Geeks party was still going on, literally right outside my room, so we hung around there for a while before calling it a night.
