San Diego Comic-Con 2019 – Day 4 Recap

Jul 22, 2019 Posted by in Features | Comments

My Sunday, the final day of San Diego Comic-Con 2019, was a really light one, with just two press rooms, a press line, and a panel/screening.

There wasn’t much going on in the morning, so I started off the day with a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, using the voucher the hotel had given me earlier in the week for some issues I had had with my room on Tuesday night. Then I finished packing things up and checked out/checked my bags, and headed to the Hilton Bayfront for the final time.

Riverdale Press Room

My first press room of the day was for The CW’s Riverdale, which will be returning this Fall for its fourth season. They had asked us not to ask the cast about the passing of Luke Perry, but did mention that the season premiere will be a tribute to the actor. This was easily the best run room of the con for me as we got to speak with every and even finished up early. There were a lot fewer talent present than last year, but all of the main young cast were there. In the room were series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, and stars K.J. Apa (“Archie Andrews”), Cole Sprouse (“Jughead Jones”), Madelaine Petsch (“Cheryl Blossom”), Lili Reinhart (“Betty Cooper”) & Camila Mendes (“Veronica Lodge”).

LEGO DC Batman: Family Matters Press Room

Next, I headed around the corner for a press room for the direct-to-video animated film LEGO DC Batman: Family Matters, which finds Batman, Robin, and Batgirl trying to stick together when Gotham’s most dangerous villains attempt to pull them apart. The brick-tastic adventure will arrive on Digital, Blu-ray & DVD August 20 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

In the press room, we got the chance to speak with some of the voice actors and filmmakers who brought these characters to life, including the voices of Batman, Batgirl and Red Hood—Troy Baker (Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman: Arkham Origins), Alyson Stoner (Phineas and Ferb) and Jason Spisak (Young Justice)—along with producer Rick Morales (LEGO Scooby-Doo!: Haunted Hollywood) and director Matt Peters (LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: Aquaman: Rage of Atlantis). I quickly realized just how little I knew about Batman as other people were like comic book encyclopedias, excitedly asking about various Robins (who knew there was more than one?!) and other characters that might appear in the film.

Supernatural Press Room

The press room for Supernatural was packed, due to this being the show’s final SDCC appearance, so I wasn’t able to participate in the roundtable discussions. However, I did get permission to join the photo line. So I snapped a shot of the cast as they lined up for photos, and then headed out of my final press room of the con.

LEGO DC Batman: Family Matters Screening/Panel

I had nothing else on my agenda, so I figured I might as well try to go to at least one panel. The LEGO DC Batman: Family Matters film sounded like a lot of fun after talking with the cast about it, so I headed to the convention center and walked right into the room as the previous panel was ending. I got a front row seat to watch the film and listen to the Q&A with the cast.

The movie was so much fun, and during the Q&A afterwards they were offering up prizes to children who asked the best question. However, a lot of the questions were centered around the appearance of Billy Babson in the film, and not about any of the batman family. The creators eventually all but confirmed that they are working on a LEGO DC Shazam direct to video movie, and then asked for no more questions about Shazam. Sounds like they already have another hit in the works!

Afterwards I headed back to the hotel to get my bags and wait for the Supershuttle to take me to the airport. This was the first year my Supershuttle pickup went completely smoothly, and I even got to the airport earlier than expected!

It was another really fun convention, and I look forward to coming back to do it all again next year!
