San Diego Comic-Con 2015 – Day 3 – Saturday

Aug 03, 2015 Posted by in Features | 1 comment

Saturday of Comic-Con was Syfy day for me—four press rooms and two panels, all for Syfy shows. I have been creating separate posts with videos from each room, and have linked those below, along with photos from the roundtables.

My first press room of the day was for Syfy’s upcoming miniseries Childhood’s End, which will air in December. In the press room we got to speak with director Nick Hurran as well as cast members Yael Stone and Julian McMahon. Screenwriter Matthew Graham and star Daisy Betts were also in the press room, but unfortunately never made it to our table.

I had a two hour break until my next press room, so I headed across the hall to the Indigo Ballroom to check out the panels for Childhood’s End and 12 Monkeys. These would end up being the only panels attended all weekend.

The Childhood’s End panel got me excited to check out the miniseries. I really appreciated that the moderator steered the conversation away from spoilers from those who had read the book.

I also really enjoyed the 12 Monkeys panel—it was fun to see all of the cast together, and I was surprised to discover that Barbara Sukowa uses her own accent on the show—I always thought it was something she was doing for the character!

As the 12 Monkeys panel finished, I headed back across the hall for the press room for the series. In the press room, we got to speak with everyone—series creators/writers Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas, as well cast members Amanda Schull (“Dr. Cassandra Railly”), Barbara Sukowa (“Katarina Jones”), Emily Hampshire (“Jennifer Goines”), Aaron Stanford (“James Cole”), Kirk Acevedo (“José Ramse”) and Todd Stashwick (“Deacon”).

When I attended last year’s Syfy’s Digital Press Tour, I had mentioned to Aaron Stanford that we grew up in the same town and that I had gone to school with his brother. So it was neat that he recognized me as soon as I started to ask a question at the roundtable. After the tables were all done, he came up to me to talk some more—whether he asked one of the PR folks my name, or actually remembered it, I’m not sure, but it was nice of him to stop by to say hello afterwards.

My third press room of the day was for Syfy’s ambitious upcoming space series The Expanse, which also premieres in December. In the room we got to speak with writers/executive producers Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby and Naren Shankar as well as cast members Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper and Wes Chatham. Stars Thomas Jane, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Cas Anvar were also there, but unfortunately never made it to our table.

I had some avid book readers at my table, so many of the Q&As dived immediately into more detail rather than having the actors explain their characters and the EPs explain the general premise of the show first.

My final press room of the day was for Syfy’s fun zombie series Z Nation, which returns in September. We got to speak with writer/executive producer Karl Schaefer, and stars DJ Qualls (“Citizen Z”), Kellita Smith (“Warren”), Keith Allan (“Murphy”), Russell Hodgkinson (“Doc”), Nat Zang (“10K”), Pisay Pao (“Cassandra”) and Anastasia Baranova (“Addy”).

With my press rooms were done for the day, I headed back to my hotel room. I got changed, and headed for the annual NBC Digital Network party, which took place on the rooftop of the Andaz this year. I always enjoy this party as its a great way to meet up with other blogger friends as well as the PR folks I primarily only deal with via email.

The food was really good—they had mini hamburgers and sausages as well as a taco/fajita station, and trays of hors d’oeuvres being walked around. There was also a special themed drink menu for the night.

NBC had brought their Heroes Reborn photo opp and The Blindspot temporary tattoo stations from the gaslamp to the party, which was great because the couple of times I went to check these out, the lines were really long.

Talent from Grimm, Heroes Reborn, Blindspot, Hannibal, and other NBC shows were mingling throughout the night—I even saw Seth Meyers at one point.

After the party I headed back to my hotel to pack, and prepare for the final day’s press rooms.
